A really great holiday idea is to crochet coasters! This is great if you're lazy (like I've been lately), if you have many people to crochet gifts for or if you just want to make a last minute gift because you're super busy...depending on your skill level, this should take about 30 minutes to an hour (maybe an hour and a 1/2). I have a very unorthodox way of creating my circles, which is just a bad habit, so I posted a link at the end with a good source on a structured way to create flat circles. I usually just freestyle everything because I'm being super lazy. It can sometimes cost you a lot of time because you have to keep starting over, so it's just better to start out right the first go round!

Here is a quick start to a circle, and if you're experienced, when you get to the part where you sc 1x, sc 2x, you can feel out the material as it's being produced...if it feels as if it's getting wavy, stop increasing with the sc 2x. If it feels tight, as if it's about to curl or bend, begin to increase.

To start a circle:

chain 4. slip stitch in the first ch (4th ch. from the hook) to create the circle. Tug on the string that hangs in order to tighten the circle.

sc 2 x in each ch of the circle (because you slip stitched in the 4th ch from the hook, you should have 3 chains available to crochet in. You'll get 6 stitches after you crochet 2x in each stitch).

After you get your 6 stitches of sc (single crochet), slip stitch in the next loop.

chain 1, sc 1x, sc 2x

I like this video for the embroidery: to access the youtube video to the surface embroidery chain stitch click here

Here is how I do it:

I place the yarn flat against the back side of the material, and I pull a loop through to the front side of the material. Then you go into the next stitch in whatever direction you need to go in order to achieve the design you want. I had to often start over. However, you can draw on the material and follow the design. Although, when I did it that way, it did not work very well for me.

Check out the video on the chain stitch embroidery.

This is not my usual blog, but I wanted to share the link to this dragon, Pan Long, created by my mother in law! The pattern can be purchased or he can be made for you. click here for more details on how to buy the pattern or have the dragon made at A Better Bead in Pisgah Forest, NC

Here is the description from my mother-in-law, Shelley Bossert, The Teddy Bear Lady!

Pan Long is a fully articulated Chinese dragon constructed entirely from seed beads and Swarovski crystals. He is so flexible you can even tie him in a knot if you want. He can be worn as a necklace, a brooch, a bracelet or simply carried about as the ultimate in elegant worry beads. Pan Long, coiling dragon in Chinese, measures 8.5", when complete. His head is made using tubular and flat, even as well as odd count peyote. His scales are herringbone cones and his tail is a collection of seed bead and crystal streamers in a riot of colors. He has no wires if any kind inside his body, just seed beads. How this is achieved, you will have to buy the pattern to discover.

The design and pattern for this undulating wonder is my original work as are the instructional text, diagrams and photographs. The pattern is twelve pages of detailed instruction and full color photographs and diagrams of every step of the instructional process. Supplies needed for this project are pictured above. This pattern is not for the faint-hearted. It requires advanced skills in both peyote and herringbone stitches. Pan Long himself, the pattern, text and graphics are all copyrighted material and may not be duplicated all or in part without written permission from me.

The inspiration for this pattern was another artist's work, Linda Richmond. I work at A Better Bead and Crafts, the most wonderful bead shop I have ever visited. A customer came in one day wearing a segmented fish she had made from one of Linda's patterns. The shop owner, Alethea, and I were intrigued by the flexibility of the fish but we wondered if a fully 3D version of some creature might be made with as much flexibility as Linda's fish. We decided I should try. A dragon's body seemed to lend itself well to the project. Research told me that a Chinese dragon had a boxy head and a legless body versus the more complicated sculpted body with legs of a European dragon. Not wishing to make a hard job next to impossible, I opted for the Chinese dragon.

It took me nearly four months and 20+ prototypes to rework the way the scales needed to be attached to allow completely free, 360 degree motion. When I attached the final scale to Pan Long's body, I felt sure I had been successful. Just to be sure he was up to the wear and tear his seductively limber body invites, we coiled Pan Long around a display on the front counter in the shop and stood back to see what reaction we would get from customers. They couldn't seem to put him down. If you are up to the challenge of making a dragon of your own, I'll bet you won't be able to put yours down either.

This listing is for the pattern to make Pan Long only, not for the dragon himself. A full color hard copy is available for purchase at a cost of US $40.00 plus shipping. If you are in love with Pan Long himself, he too is for sale at a cost of US $150.00 plus shipping. If you love the Pan Long but wish he was in different colors, a special order version of him can be made for you for the pre-paid price of US $150.00 plus shipping. If you are not a beader; will never make a Pan Long of your own; cannot afford or do not wish to buy a completed Pan Long from me but still think he is worth your time, please, feel free to Stumble, Pin, Like or otherwise make note of him in social media or private messages to your friends and/or family.
Thank you for reading my proud ramblings,
Shelley, the NCTeddyBearLady

P.S. A word of caution about the use of this pattern. You have my permission to make all the pouches with teddy bear toppers you wish from this pattern for yourself or to give away. You do not, however, have permission to make commercial use of it. Specifically, that means you may not make and sell pouches or teddy toppers made from this pattern, sell the pattern, copy, reproduce or use any part of it to make money or to share with others to save the cost of purchasing their own. I reserve that right solely for myself.

You do have my permission to let this pattern be a means for finding your own artistic voice. Vary the design of the pouch or the teddy topper so that they are no longer recognizable as my work and I wish you G-d's speed. Change a stitch here and there for the sake of calling it your own and, as I learned to say in Turkey, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your nether regions! . . .And. . .keep a watchful eye over your shoulder for my lawyer. As they say in department store dressing rooms, violators will be prosecuted.
Hello All! I recently broke the zipper on my $60.00 bookbag that I purchased 2 years ago from the college bookstore at UNC Asheville. I am now at CofC (College of Charleston), and I do not plan to purchase another expensive bookbag from the Borders bookstore on campus. I went home, and I immediately pulled out the fattest yarn that I could find (yarn thickness or weight), and started crocheting. Visit the following website to learn more regarding Yarn Thickness.
Simple Double Crochet Pot Holder

Level: Beginner

Row 1: ch 72-102 (or whatever length/width you'd like it to be)

If I want to dbl crochet 70, I chain 2 more because I like to skip two chains

before I make the first dbl crochet stitch to form the second row.

Row 2-12: skip two chains by dbl crocheting in the third loop the hook. Double crochet all the way

to the end, and you should have a total of 70 or 100 (if you do it like I did).

Edging: you can single/half double/double crochet around the square once you get to the end of the

12th row. Just twist the square around at a 90 degree angle (simply go around the edges).

The loop for hanging: once you have gone completely around once and you get to the last stitch

(which should be right next to the first edging stitch that you started), join the first and the last stitch

with a slip stitch and start a chain. Ch about 5-7 and slip stitch again into the same stitch or right next

to it. Cut the string and tie it off. Take a smaller needle if you have it and pull the loose string through

the back side of the stitches.

I may have mentioned before that I work in a zebrafish lab, and I really like the women that I work with...they are all scientists and super cool. So, I made the bags below and filled them

with candy as a Holiday gift. My co workers really seemed to like them. These little bags can work as a cellphone pouch, make up bag, pencil-pen sack, etc. To make them, start off by workin in rounds, like making a hat: ch 4, slip stitch in the fourth chain from the hook to make a circle, ch two and sc, hdc, or dc around, slip stitch in the top of the ch2- try crocheting two times in every other stitch until you get the circle or bottom of the bag to the desired circumference. Decrease every five stitches to create the bend and crochet up until you get to the top of the bag and do a filet stitch or holes-sc, dc, or hdc two times, skip two stitches and crochet the chosen stitch two more times. ch 80 and sc in all 80 to make a drawstring to go in the holes. Make a longer chain to attach to the sides of the bag as a handle. You guys know I don't to traditional patterns, but email me if you need extra help: barrettbossertia@cofc.edu

Hello All! I haven't posted anything new for awhile, but I wanted to share some really cool new crochet fashion from Wiggleroomnyc at Etsy.com (update 03/02/13-wiggleroomnyc closed). My sister, Ouida, who taught me to crochet granny squares at the age of 10 years old crocheted a tank top and a dress that's just out of this world! These awesome handmade pieces were available for sale for only $45.00 (the red, gold and green top with the white edging), and the creme de menthe dress is only $180.00 (short sleeved dress can be seen at Etsy). However, my sister closed down her etsy shop, and decided to sell her items privately. Contact Pekuliar Closet on facebook for more information.
This is the perfect summer dress, the filet stitching is perfect for keeping cute and cool on a hot N.Y day. I love the model's (Ore, my neice) short natural hair, which enhances the fresh and cool design of the dress...the color scheme of the design also says "cool breeze". I think it's important to consider all of this when designing a crocheted piece. I tend to struggle with selecting the right color schemes (usually due to poor yarn selection). This is a great example of how to enhance a simple color scheme with an intricate design. This dress can no longer be viewed in more detail at Pekuliar Closet @facebook.com. You may have seen my original High Fashion Crochet post that listed the pattern for a counterfeit Chanel crocheted handbag. Well, I failed to mention that it comes from an organization that counterfeits designer crocheted handbags. Check out this amazing website! I absolutely love it...you have to read for yourself. The genius who came up with this is anti-factory, and I love the fabulous items listed on her site.

Okay, make two identical triangles (the top half of a bikini). Be sure to measure yourself for how large you would like the triangles to be. Remember that the area of a triangle is 1/2 base (height). Really all you have to do is measure how long you want the base to be, and how long you want the height to be, and then crochet a chain the length of the base and start from there. Some people crochet 1.25 inch more to account for elastic bands, drawstrings, etc. It's up to you, but you have to be patient and willing to experiment...or just youtube it! haha!

To crochet a triangle: Chain however long you would like the base of your triangle to be (the longest bottom portion). for example: chain 47. double crochet in the 3rd loop from your hook and double crochet 44 (the ch 2 counts as 1 double crochet...total 45 double crochet). ch2 . turn
Row 2: double crochet (dc) 44. turn

Row 3: double crochet decrease 1x (dc decrease should have to go into 2 or stitches, so you decrease and then dc until you get to the other end, and double crochet decrease again). So, we dc decrease and dc 41 and dc decrease 1x again. So, that's 2 stitches to decrease + 41 dc + 2 stitches to decrease = 45 stitches we started out with.

Row 4-6: Dc 41.

(So, after the decrease, you should have less than 45 stitches to dc into...I guess it would be minus 2 or minus 4 (both ends decreased total), I can't remember right now if the dc decrease removes 2 stitches per dc decrease or one. However, after you decrease, if you decide to dc a row without decreasing, you will dc 41 instead of 45 because you decreased...this is the key to making the shape of the triangle).
I usually crochet about 2 - 3 rows before I started decreasing between rows. So, I'll decrease after about 2 rows, and then

Row 7: dc decrease. dc 37. dc decrease

(go into the stitch- meaning the stitch of the previous row).

You will continue on like this until you decrease down to only one stich, which I usually half double crochet (hdc- yarn over, go into the stitch and pull through yarn...now you have 3 loops on the hook-pull the yarn through all three loops on the ch) and start making a chain for the support straps-strings that go around the neck.

Final Row as mentioned above: hdc in the final stitch at the top of the triangle. ch 60
(For a more supportive strap-instead of just strings-single crochet (sc- yarn over, go into the stitch and pull through yarn- you now have two loops on the hook-yarn over and pull through both loops) or hdc into each of the 60 chains you made for the straps.

Edging- I usually go around almost the entire triangle and straps with a simple sc bordering. When I get to the base of the triangle, I make a filet or just holes, which are made by 2 dc, skip two dc, 2 dc- repeat this all the way to the end of the base, and then sc up the sides. It looks nice and finished when this is done.

Strap for the bottom of the top: ch 100 or how ever many you need for the length. sc in each ch (repeat for however strong you want it to be...it can be just a chain, or you can repeat the rows until it's a firm strap). String this through the loops/holes made at the base of each triangle.

Repeat exactly for the other triangle. So, you need to write down each step. I can recall recording the triangles on a scrap piece of paper, but I didn't save it :(

You can approach the mid part 2 different ways: crochet the midpart seperately and attach it after or turn the bikini top upside down and crochet across the bottom of both bases. You will approach this just like the triangles for the top, but you will make it larger and taper it down to where the top of the triangle will end at the back of the crotch area. Then you will make a chain to make a thong.

You have to increase to make the triangle at the back of the thong. So, after I get the string long enough to where it is almost at the top of the butt crack (haha), I start to increase: I'll start out with a hdc where I want to start the small triangle (at the back thong part). I add two dc into the 1 hdc and then go into each stitch across the top. Be sure to add strings on both sides of the small triangle and on the mid part so that you may tie the bottom securely to your bottom.

If you don't want a thong: just make a large triangle for your bum and a smaller triangle for the crotch. Instead of making the tops of these triangles to a point, don't go that far, but just make it square like and make the two meet in the middle by connecting with yarn or by sewing. You just have to measure yourself correctly.
For this hat, I used a cotton strand that was super thin, and so I bought two balls of yarn, and put the two strands from each ball together to make one thicker strand, but it's still not so thick that it's heavy. I apologize because I threw the wrapper away, and I can't remember the brand name. However, the yarn is so thin that it's perfect for making doilies, and the needle I used is a #5 Steel Crochet Hook 5-Size 7

This is a photo of the actual yarn and needle I used.
The Pattern, kinda sorta...

Ch 6

Slip stitch in ch 1 to create a small circle.

DC 6 around the circle (repeat 2 x or until the circle starts to bend in the slightest)

To make a flat circle, increase by dc 2x in 1 stitch, dc 1 (repeat around until flat circle and return to 1 dc in each stitch)

Repeat until you have a flat circle about 7 in diameter. Below is a you tube video on how to dc decrease.

Dc decrease once every five stitches all the way around, so dc 5, decrease (dc decrease).

Crochet once in each stitch all the way around for about 10 rows

To make the brim:

begin to increase by 2 dc in 1 stitch every other stitch for one row. so, 2 dc in 1, 1 dc in 1 (repeat around) repeat until it gets wavier or you can decrease down to 1 in each stitch again to lessen the waviness of the brim.

I was inspired to scour the web for more inspiration before going to bed tonight. I do love this blog, but I recently quit job hunting after snagging an awesome gig as a lab aide in a microbiology lab! Also, Statistics has been kicking my butt! However, there is no excuse...one must always make time for crochet!http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/flowers.php Here's a cool link to a site that has an abundance of flower patterns for crocheting...you don't have to make a whole new sweater, you can just spruce up an old sweater or cardigan to start!

I apologize for neglecting my blog for entirely too long! However, I'm a CofC student with a full-time job where I am forced to stare at a bright computer screen for eight hours a day, and take back to back telephone calls within the confines of a drabby, gray cubicle...but I'm not complaining.

Now for the crochet! What you see here below is a cleverly designed crocheted slinky, black, "freak 'em" dress (as Beyonce would say, to avoid the original term coined by the comedian, Martin Lawrence, which includes the vernacular...if you get my drift). I decided to maximize the size of the photograph for you to notice the thin yarn used to create a netted appearance in the areas

that don't need to be covered, and then a tight stitch to cover private areas. Take note of the chain stitches at the shoulders and chest area.

Revenge of the Granny Square is back...muhuhuhuhahahaha!

These dresses are oh so retro. I'm really in favor of the full length crocheted dresses. I like how each granny square is edged in black, so that the black edging is what connects all the squares, giving a collection of mismatched squares a cohesive appearance. I just wish that they didn't put the red and white, candy striped socks on the poor child. She may be red-headed, but she's nobody's step-child...lol! I don't know what the heack I'm taking about. Oops, did I just text talk? I don't know the rules of blogging, but I certainly would never do that in a term paper.

This dark and edgy photo...I kind of find it awkward, and the only reason that I've decided to post it is because I'm digging the creativity with the granny squares, and the black lining does remind me of the photograph above. However, this model...in this pose has to grow on me or something, I don't know...it's just wierd. I am totally feeling the black waist band/ belt around this dress versus the thin, brown belt that I believe I see in the granny square dress above.

Sometimes the term, "high fashion", can be somewhat of a turnoff...often it is perceived as bulky, ugly, fashionably elite;as well as conceptually and financially outrageous! At one time or another, we have all flipped the pages of a magazine, and thought to ourselves...what's the big deal? Although, in my case, I must admit that I am impressed more often than I am not. A few years ago, I got the idea to google, "high fashion crochet". I would like to share with you some of the sites and photos that google referred me to. I hope you are as inspired by them as I was...enjoy!

This dress is $110.00 by Stewart Brown- handmade crocheted dress. In my opinion, the price is reasonable for the work. However, if you just can't find the space in your budget for a $110.00 dress, buy the yarn, and find a similar pattern or create your own!

Tips and Hints: The skirt portion of this dress was made using a netted or mesh pattern. Here is a link to a guide/tutorial for the following stitches: http://needlecraftsuperior.com/?tag=crochet-mesh-stitches

This ruffled skirt was once a crocheted table cloth! Who knew that I could rummage through my Gran's linen closet, and find some old table cloth she made ages ago to rework into a stylish skirt or fun dress!

This long, black, oversized crocheted scarf is just the right accessory to further accentuate this sleek dress. I would have styled the model's hair in a simpler fashion, as the dress and scarf are dramatic enough.

I wanted to post a sample of one of my finished items, a crocheted hat that I made about a year ago when I was residing in Asheville,NC. Googling free patterns is a common past time of mine. I love to see what cool crocheted pieces I can come up with or become inspired by. Asheville has an enormous hippie culture, and I noticed all the hippie girls at my school wearing these slouchy, floppy looking hats. So, I started Googling, and I came across a pattern for the "Puffy Slouchy Hat" on the following site:

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=195823.0 Copy and paste the link into your web browser to see Jessica Suzanne's version of the hat. I have posted her pattern on my blog for you below.

Here is my version of the hat:

I followed the pattern up until the last few rows. I did a filet stitch for one or two rows at the very end.

Puffy Slouchy Hat
Bulky weight yarn, size K hook. For Worsted weight use a J hook

The numbers in the [] say how many stitches there should be.

Puff stitch: (YO, insert hook in next st, YO, pull up a loop) 4 times, YO, and draw through all loops on hook. (Here’s a video)

You do not have to join rounds, and this will create a spiral, and there will be no seam. Use a stitch marker if you do this, and keep the stitch count the same.

1: ch 4, 12 dc in first st, join in ch. (Just grab one loop from top of the chain. This makes the seam less visible, and this will make a circle.) [12]

2: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is (in same st as join - ch3 counts as first dc), 2 dc in each stitch, join with sl st (remember, the ch counts as a st!). [24]

3: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is, (work 1 dc, 2 dc in next stitch) around. Join. [36]

4: ch 3, work 1 dc where chain is, (work 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. Join. [48]

5: ch3, work 1 dc where chain is, (work 1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc) around. Join. [60]

6: ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Join. [60]

7: ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Join. [60]

8: ch 3, 1 dc in each st around. Join. [60]

9: ch 3, puff st in same st as join, dc in next st, (puff in next st, dc in next
st) around. Join in top st of first puff. [60 sts: 30 puffs, 30 dc]

10: ch 1, (sc in top of puff, sc in next dc) around. Join. [60]
* It will look like you are skipping stitches here, but you aren’t. Just
remember, sc in top of puff, skip spot, and sc in top of dc post. Make sure you have 60 sts here!

11: same as row 9. [60 sts: 30 puffs, 30 dc]

12: sc around, same as row 10. [60]
13: same as row 9. [30 puffs, 30 dc]

16: ch 1, (sc in next 3 sts, dec over next 2 sts) around. Join. [48]
You can stop pinching yourself because it is not a dream! Don't worry, I thought the same thing when I discovered this pattern at an awesome blog called Made by K: copy and paste the links into your web browser (http://madebyk-tutorials.blogspot.com/2009/12/hello-kitty-granny-square-scarf-crochet.html) Miss K's blog is an outstanding source for this pattern; you will find a detailed instructions with pictures, abbreviation explanations and diagrams for the hardest part (in my opinion), the face. If you're even slightly off on the eyes and whiskers, you'll still have a cute square, but it will be lacking in authenticity.

The picture of the Hello Kitty Granny Square that I posted was taken shortly before I submitted the square to my Japanese Culture Arts 310 Professor, Christopher Daniels, at UNCA in Asheville, NC. We were all required to create a wikipage on Outsider Japan;copy and paste the following link into your web browser to view the page I created: http://outsiderjapan.pbworks.com/w/page/37892912/hello%20kitty%20granny%20square

The page contains nothing more regarding Hello Kitty Crochet than you will find right here on this blog. However, it does contain a great deal of awesome information regarding all things Japanese culture. There are other Hello Kitty topics posted on the site as well. However, you will have to sift through the student projects and course material posted by the professor. I can recall learning some very interested tidbits of the culture that is considered taboo in America. For example, the prevalence of teen, male, homosexual manga(japanese comics) specifically marketed to teenage girls, the Japanese Phallic Festival(appears to be a family affair),and I recently discovered the Hello Kitty Murder, which was an article done by the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A46307-2000Dec8¬Found=true

I won't go into the gruesome details, if you want the dirt, you can read the story for yourself. There's no doubt that Hello Kitty has had an interesting influence on asian culture for many years, but murder? As far as Hello Kitty is concerned, I think that's just blasphemous.

According to hellokittyuniverse.com, the kitty started out in England in 1974 (although she was introduced to Japan by a company known as Sanrio the same year). On a lighter note, I would like to crochet a Groovy Hello Kitty Coin purse as a tribute to Hello Kitty's debut in 1974 on a vinyl change purse. Maybe we can start a Groovy Hello Kitty Crocheted Coin Purse Competition!
Crochet is too awesome to only be associated with newborns, potholders and afghans. While I do loveto make the occasional cliche bootie and mittens, I am more thrilled to create the trendy hat, sexy dress or fun bikini. For many years, crocheted items has been flaunted on the runways and advertised in fall catalogs. and If you want to learn to crochet, you've come to the right place!

I have found many great patterns and ideas for crocheting online! However, you can't enjoy the patterns if you don't know how to begin the basic stitch. So, I'll show you how to get started!

Materials you will need: a ball of yarn and a crochet needle

Tip: Make sure the needle is the right size for the thickness of your yarn. If you use an extremely small needle for a thick string of yarn, you will find it difficult to pull the yarn through the loops. Most yarn companies have paper labels that will include the size for the best needle to use, and they usually throw in a free pattern (usually for oven mitts or an afgahn)!

Step 1: Take your yarn and twist it securely around the needle.

Step 2: There is a proper way to hold a crochet needle and thread. If you are right handed, like myself, you will hold the needle in your right hand, and wrap the hanging yarn (leading to the ball of yarn) around your index finger until there is tension in the string. Grasp the base of the loop (there should be a small piece of string hanging from the base of the loop around the needle) initially tied around the needle with your left thumb and middle finger. Now you are ready to start your chain stitch!

Step 3: "Yarn over" is the term that can be found in patterns when instructing to wrap the needle around the yarn to where the thread is beneath the hook in order to be pulled through the loop on the needle/hook. The final product is a braid/chain like effect. The diagram below from www.tlc.howstuffworks.com clearly displays the technique.

A pattern often begins with a certain number of chains to build upon. For example, it may instruct you to begin a hat by saying, "ch 6". So, you will wrap the yarn around the needle to create your first loop, and then "yarn over" and pull the thread through the loop on the needle/hook six times to start the hat.
